Most of Scotland should brace for snow and ice with an amber weather warning issued for the North.

The warning will mean that rural communities could potentially be cut off while there are fears power cuts are likely to cause interruptions.

Southern England, North Wales and Northern Ireland will all be hampered by snow showers and icy stretches.

And the icy weather means there is a chance of travel delays on roads.

Those travelling should also be prepared for disruption as rail and air travel face a slew of delays and cancellations, with cops warning: “only travel if essential due to icy driving conditions.”

But if you do need to brave the elements, the Met Office has shared a number of tips for drivers to stay safe.

TAKE CARE AROUND GRITTERS

Gritters usually only distribute salt when their orange warning lights and ‘spreading’ signs are illuminated.

If they aren’t, you’re generally safe to follow them at a normal distance. Be wary that they could begin scattering grit at any time though.

SLOW DOWN

Even at extremely low speeds there is a risk of skidding, especially when applying the brakes or making sharp steering inputs.

Crucially, it can take 10 times longer to stop in icy conditions.

USE A HIGH GEAR

This helps to avoid wheel spin and establishes a better grip when driving on icy surfaces.

AVOID HARSH BRAKING

Reduce your speed and avoid harsh braking, rapid acceleration, and sharp steering.

Do everything slowly and gently, as sudden movements could cause your vehicle to lose traction and skid.

MANEOUVRE GENTLY

Turn the wheel smoothly to avoid skidding.

If you do skid, ease off the accelerator.
